Understanding The Barriers Of Successful Addiction Treatment

Everyone has a role to play in stopping substance abuse and with the help of  different  treatment programs and rehab centers set-up by the government and other concerned groups all over the country, addiction can be stopped.

But despite that, many people remain reluctant to receive treatment due to regulatory or privacy concerns. Here are the top three barriers for a successful substance abuse treatment.

  1. Stigma
  2. One of the main reasons many people refuse addiction treatment is because of the stigma or the negative reactions they get from others.  Most addicts feel alone, unsure and wrongly judged by others; not to mention the legal consequences of their addiction.

Also, they feel vulnerable and afraid; hence, they react defensively and in anger when being questioned regarding their substance abuse. This is why many refuse to admit their addiction and seek treatment.

  3. Limited Access
  4. Although there are several treatment centers across the country, not everyone have access to them especially those from low-income families. The number of public or non-profit treatment centers is scarce and budget cuts on these places certainly don’t help at all.

In addition, many people aren’t even aware that substance abuse treatment programs exist and those who know have to endure a long waiting list before receiving any treatment. And though these are valid concerns, addiction counselors continue to encourage everyone to seek treatment.

  5. Isolation
  6. Since substance abuse can happen to anyone, residents of rural areas are susceptible as well. The number of drug addicts and alcoholics in these areas are as high as those in cities; however, unlike those in the city, many of them don’t get treated due to the inaccessibility of treatment centers.

And even if they’re able to attend a treatment center, the long trip to the nearest center take a toll on them both physically and emotionally, which lead them to give up. Plus, other services for addicts are also unavailable.

These and more are just some of the barriers people encounter when seeking substance abuse treatment. Nonetheless, everyone’s doing what they can to overcome these barriers in order to help those who require addiction treatment. If you or someone you know is in this predicament, don’t hesitate to talk to a rehab counselor to know your options.
