As we begin 2012, the fight against teen drug addiction continues and it begins at home. Aside from asking help from addiction counselors, parents should have complete understanding of addiction and its warning signs in order to provide intervention.

There are several changes both physically and behaviorally that occurs when someone is abusing drugs and it often differs with the type of substance being abused. Here are some of the signs/symptoms of teen drug abuse.

Marijuana

Also called weed, pot or dank, marijuana is the most commonly abused drug by teens and adults alike. This drug is usually smoked like cigarette; so, if you notice smoking paraphernalia like pipes and excessive use of air fresheners and cologne, then, it’s highly probable that your teen may be smoking pot.

In terms of physical and behavior aspects, some of the signs of drug addiction include bloodshot eyes, coordination and orientation issues, fatigue, laziness, unintelligible speech, excessive hunger, lack of interest, and delayed reaction.

Methamphetamine and Cocaine

These two drugs are very similar in nature since both are in powder form and can be taken in several ways including snorting it. Also, they have similar effects on the user; though, the tests used to check these drugs differ.

Cocaine and meth are designed as stimulants and some of the signs that one’s using them include restlessness, hyperactivity and dilates pupils.

Other Drugs

Since prescription drugs are more accessible to teenagers, many resort to these drugs as their addictive substance. Examples of such drugs include Vicodin, Ritalin, Xanax, Valium and the infamous Ecstasy.

Since most of these drugs are either hallucinogens, stimulants and depressants, the signs are easily discernable and can exhibit any of the signs given above.

Aside from the physical effects of the given drugs, other signs that parents should look out for include sudden change of friends, evasiveness, withdrawal, tardiness, failing grades and sudden changes in eating and sleeping habits. If these signs are present in your teenager, maybe it’s time to get treatment in a rehab center before it’s too late.
